It’s that time of year again—when social media is loaded with pictures of kids heading back to school. Like many of you, I sent my daughter off to start another year of school, too. But this time felt a bit more emotional. This year, she’s a senior in college.
As we moved her into her apartment, I couldn’t help but think about our purpose at CampusLogic, to “help schools change lives.” It’s a purpose I am deeply connected to—and feel so grateful to be part of. That’s because, according to statistics, the odds were heavily stacked against me—a teenage mom—eventually earning a master’s degree, and my daughter, who’ll soon graduate from college.
After seeing the flood of back-to-school posts on social media, and having my own experience of sending my daughter off to college, I’ve been thinking about why those of us who work in higher education care so much about changing lives…
We Believe in People’s Dreams
You might be confused by this statement, thinking, “Don’t most people believe in others’ dreams?” Unfortunately, the answer is no. What I love most about higher education is all the stories we hear of people chasing, and achieving, their dreams—and how those of you in admissions and financial aid work so hard to help support those dreams.
Kids in college can dream about their futures—with zero filter on what they think they can achieve. I am inspired by that.
We Believe in the Greater Good that Comes from Changing Lives
Understanding that good things can arise from overcoming obstacles is a big part of changing lives. We know that change sometimes requires hard work. It’s easy to get cynical or negative when confronted by obstacles. But those who believe the greater good won’t allow such moments to alter their commitment.
Believing that there is something good in every obstacle—and something we can learn from each one—will always help us achieve change for the greater good.
For Selfish Reasons, We Help Others Succeed
When you ask people why they serve others, many are afraid to admit their own selfishness. But it really does make us feel good! And it should. You should be proud about that feeling. Who doesn’t want to be a part of something that makes us feel good all the time?
The best part about working in higher education is that changing lives helps you and your students feel good. And that’s a win-win, if you ask me!
I love this quote from Gail Sheehy: “If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we aren’t really living,” The problem is that changing lives is no easy feat. It isn’t for the faint of heart. Speaking for the entire CampusLogic team, I am grateful to work with so many schools who are changing lives every day.
Happy back-to-school time!
