EmpowerED Conference: Everything You Need to Know

EmpowerED19—The SFS Tech Conference is just around the corner—are you ready? Bringing together industry, education, and technology professionals, the two-day event focuses on driving conversation around accessibility, borrowing, and completion issues in higher education. To help you maximize your time, get you to all the sessions you want to hit—and to ensure you have the Best. Experience. Ever.—here are a few tips. 

What You Should Bring: General

Bring your ideas, enthusiasm, questions—and business cards! Networking with your peers will create connections you’ll want to retain. You’ll have access to ALL presentations and handouts after the event, so no laptop needed. If you plan to spend any time outdoors while you’re here, be sure to pack (and remember to apply) sunscreen. A canteen or re-usable water bottle is never a bad idea in the desert. Dehydration is real!  

Bring A Copy of Your Award Letter

For those planning to attend the Industry Track break out session “You Shouldn’t Need a Degree to Understand an Award Letter,” please bring a copy of your institution’s award letter. You’ll use this during the session. Hosted by Laura Keane from uAspire, this session is happening Tuesday, April 2 at 10:45 AM. Now’s the perfect time to download the conference app (iOs and Android!) and bookmark this session!

Dress Code: Business Casual

The conference dress code is business casual and there will be photographers and videographers on-site capturing the experience. While we can all agree leggings are not pants, we want you to be comfortable. If your version of comfortable is a suit and tie, or high heels, then by all means, bring it! We do recommend you have a sweater or jacket handy—hotel conference centers and restaurants are notoriously chilly. If you forget, we have you covered (hint). 

EmpowerED Conference Venue Location

The event is being held at Tempe Mission Palms. The address is: 60 E 5th Street, Tempe, AZ 85281. If you need to contact the hotel directly, please dial (480) 894-1400. 

Transportation & Parking 

As a courtesy to hotel guests, Tempe Mission Palms Hotel provides daily shuttle transportation to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor airport, from 5:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.  Unfortunately, the hotel cannot "pre-schedule" shuttle pick-ups due to the variations in scheduled versus actual arrival time.

  • Upon arrival at the airport: When you arrive at baggage claim and have luggage in-hand, please call Tempe Mission Palms at (480) 894-1400. The operator will direct you to the proper curbside location for your terminal and advise you of the estimated pick up time.   
  • Departing from the hotel to airport: The airport shuttle from the hotel to PHX runs on an "as-needed" basis, leaving every 30 minutes, on the hour and half-hour. Reservations are not required.   

If you’re driving: You’ll want to take advantage of the complimentary valet parking at Tempe Mission Palms. As a bonus this is underground parking, so no need to bring oven mitts (yes, locals do this) to safely handle your steering wheel! Self-parking is also available in any of the spaces surrounding the hotel with a parking pass obtained at check-in.

Please note: The Tempe Festival of the Arts is taking place March 29-31. As a result, the surrounding streets may (will definitely) be congested. The event concludes on Sunday at 5:30 p.m., but you should anticipate delays throughout the evening. The venue has provided the following map and instructions to assist you if you plan to arrive via taxi, Uber, or rental car:


EmpowerED Conference Badge Pick Up

Registration for EmpowerED will be in the Palm Ballroom foyer at Tempe Mission Palms. Exit at the back of the lobby and walk across the courtyard. There will be signage to direct you. All attendees are required to check in and pick up their badge and other conference materials. Badges are required for admittance into all sessions, meals, and social events.

Registration Hours: 

  • Sunday, March 31 from 4 - 6 p.m.
  • Monday, April 1 from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. 
  • Tuesday, April 2 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 

EmpowerED Conference App: Download Now!

Download the mobile conference app to stay on top of the schedule and ask questions during general sessions. This is your one-stop resource for speaker information, session schedules, and much more! Best of all, it's accessible from all devices with an internet browser (smartphones, tablets, and laptops). If you’re using a Blackberry or Windows phone, skip the steps noted below as you’ll need to use the web version of the app found here. For all other users, here are the steps:

  • Access the App Store on iOS devices or the Play Store on Android. 
  • Search for EmpowerED Conf, or click here to go right to the Android app or the iOS app
  • Once you’ve found the app, tap either Get or Install. 
  • Check your home screen for the app icon.

Eco-Friendly: No Paper Agenda

No printed copies of the EmpowerED agenda will be available onsite; however, there will be signage to assist you.

Meals & Coffee

To get your mornings off on the right foot, we’ll provide breakfast and copious amounts of coffee. Other beverages and snacks will be available throughout the day in the East and West Break Stations, and a delicious lunch buffet will be served both Monday and Tuesday. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies you forgot to mention when you registered, please let us know ASAP. Both breakfast and lunch will be served in the Cloister. Signage will direct you accordingly.

Connectivity and Social Media

Complimentary Wi-Fi will be provided to you throughout the conference center. The login information will be on the back your badge and posted in various other locations. 

Get Your Camera Ready! 

The conference app and social media are great ways to stay connected during the conference. Post your best pic in the Activity feed in the EmpowerED App or on Instagram. Write a clever caption and include #EmpowerED19. Non-Conference Activities

Tempe Mission Palms Resort is in the heart of the Arizona State University’s Campus on Mill Avenue. Without a doubt, the Mill Avenue District is the hottest entertainment center in Arizona, featuring a high concentration of restaurants, cafes, microbreweries, sports bars, unique shopping, and nightlife. The resort is also in proximity to hiking, sports arenas, museums, and other local attractions. When dining out, reservations are recommended due to the many visitors we have at this time of year.
