“No Pain, No Gain”

The other day I was thinking about something my dad used to say to us all the time when we were kids: “No Pain, No Gain.”

What’s So Great About Pain?

He would normally say this to us when we were complaining about how hard our homework was—and how we might literally die trying to figure out why two is a prime number (I threw that in there for our CEO, Gregg Scoresby—he loves prime numbers). My dad didn’t argue; he would simply remind us of that famous line, “No Pain, No Gain.” At the time, I remember thinking, “no gain sounds okay with me because this pain really sucks!”

Miraculous Gains

I recently shared this with my team during one of our meetings, and a few people found me afterward and thanked me for the reminder. We are growing quickly here at CampusLogic—and our Customer Success team must constantly be learning, growing, and innovating to keep up. This can be painful sometimes. Changing how we do something can cause us pain. But once you get through it, something miraculous happens: You forget about the pain and you get to enjoy the gain!

We get to see this “miracle” happen to customers every day. And we’re grateful for the opportunity to guide each of them through the many painful changes that can happen when transforming the student finance journey.

3 Universal Characteristics of the “No Pain, No Gain” Mindset

Here are three things I have noticed among people who embrace the “No Pain, No Gain” mindset:

  1. They don’t avoid it.
Sometimes it feels easier to put off the painful stuff for a day, week, month, year, or forever…But guess what? It isn’t going away. I love watching people just push themselves through the pain and not use excuses to avoid it. A lot of the time we avoid challenges because we don’t know how to solve them. But, until you face it—and just dig in—you can’t move past the pain.
  2. They see the bigger picture.
Keeping your eyes fixed on the bigger picture, instead of on the short-term issue that is causing the pain and frustration, helps keep you moving instead of giving up. It is great to have somebody who can keep painting that bigger picture for you and talk you through the chaos. We hope to be that for each of our customers.
  3. They communicate often and openly.
Change can cause a lot of fear. Fear can lead to shutting down and not communicating. I have found people who are okay with communicating through their challenges find the solution much faster. Often, they find even better solutions because they are open and willing to share their concerns. I don’t know how to solve something if there is no communication; if somebody has figured that out, please let me know!

Who knew that four little words could hold so much wisdom:

“No Pain, No Gain.”

There are definitely things we all can do during the pain part of a challenge—to help move us faster toward the gain. The trick is to use the people and resources around us to get to where we’re headed. At CampusLogic, we’re on a mission to remove the pain caused by friction throughout the student finance journey. Consider us your proxy: We’re always happy to absorb some of those pains—so your students and your campus can enjoy the #awesome gains that lie ahead.
