Insight of the Month: Differentiating New, Continuing, and Returning Students with ISIRs

Michael Macias, Product Manager

In just under a month, the floodgates will open for the 2019-20 aid year and ISIRs will begin pouring in to your Financial Aid office. We’ve previously shared insights focusing onISIR Submissions by Award Yearand Award Year ISIR Trends. Together, those insights help predict when those waves of incoming ISIRs could hit, using historical data from previous years as reference. But do you know how many of those ISIRs are first-time submitters to your school? Or how many are returning, possibly re-entering after a period of time? With CampusMetrics you do.

Categorizing Your Student ISIRs

The New and Returning Students Year-Over-Year instant insight runs a comparison of the ISIRs received each month, breaking them up into three groups: New, Returning, and Re-Entry. If a student’s ISIR isn’t found in any prior aid year—at least for as long as you’ve been using StudentForms—then that student would be considered New. If a student’s ISIR is found in the previous aid year, then he or she would be considered as Returning. And, if a student’s ISIR is not found for the previous aid year, but is found for an aid year prior to that, that student would be considered Re-Entry.

How This IRIS Insight Helps Your Institution

Data from this insight can help you quantify your recruitment strategy’s success and highlight areas for improvement.

  • Returning students can be an indicator of the continuing population coming in year-over-year
  • New students are seen as potential students ready to be enrolled
  • Re-Entry students are categorized as those who are interested in returning to your school

Note that your school must have last years’ ISIRs loaded into CampusMetrics in order to display any Returning students. At least the last two years of ISIRs must be loaded to display any Re-Entry students.
