Shift Summit 2021 | Community Building, Together
The University of Colorado Boulder’s Miramontes Arts & Sciences Program (MASP) is an inclusive academic community and scholarship program. dedicated to supporting highly motivated and traditionally underrepresented students the program’s central mission is to create a supportive environment with high standards to promote students' transition to college, degree completion, and post-graduate success. Established in 1993, MASP uses an evidence-based model that emphasizes equity and access to resources, enrichment opportunities, a supportive network of peers, faculty and staff, and individualized academic support. MASP students credit the program for their academic success: These students achieve higher retention and graduation rates that outperform the university as a whole. MASP shows the vital need for higher ed institutions to allocate resources and build programs that support underserved students. In this session, MASP program administrators will discuss their intersectional framework that built an inclusive academic community and highlight how the program’s structure and programming holistically address student needs. The session will also examine recent data gathered throughout the past year to see how the pandemic has impacted diverse students. Participants will see evidence of program effectiveness and learn concrete best practices for supporting the well-being, resilience, and success of first-generation and underrepresented students in higher education.
